Times Record -A history of relocating refugees at Fort Chaffee


Since 1975 and the arrival of Vietnamese refugees, Fort Chaffee has been a relocation center for those displaced from their homes due to war and natural disasters. Because of Fort Chaffee, a Vietnamese community took hold in Fort Smith. The work at Fort Chaffee and area sponsors helped Vietnamese people relocate after trips by boats and airplanes to flee Vietnam at the end of the war.

The Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority (FCRA) Board of Directors have approved a plan to transfer a small park near the Sebastian County soccer fields to Sebastian County for use as a park and learning fields for the Sebastian County Extension Office.

The Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority board of directors approved nearly $3 million in property sales at its regular meeting Thursday (Aug. 18) including the sale of a parking lot, 28 acres for single-family homes and 61 acres for an 840,000-square-feet warehouse/distribution center.
